My Amma has three daughters and granddaughters. 🤍 Recently, someone told her it was a “shame” that only one of her daughters had given her grandsons, while the other two had given her granddaughters. It made me think about how deeply the preference for sons can still exist in parts of our Tamil community. It also took me straight back to when Appa died. One of the biggest conversations at the time was who was going to step in and perform his final rites. In many Tamil Hindu families, sons have traditionally been expected to perform their parents’ final rites — another reason so much importance has historically been placed on having a boy. But Appa didn’t have a son. He had us. And as his daughters, we stood there and performed his final rites for him. My parents never brought us up to believe we were less because we were girls. They never made us feel that having a son would have completed our family in a way that three daughters couldn’t. And now, as I raise a daughter of my own, that’s something I want to carry forward. I hope our girls grow up knowing that they don’t need to be somebody’s son to carry their family, honour their parents or make them proud. My parents didn’t “only” have daughters. They had daughters. And that was always enough. 🤍 #tamilculture #tamilwomen #tamilfamily #tamilgirl #tamiltiktok
