My memere made these for us growing up. (Rhode Island) The jelly goes on the top after you cook it.

Trust me... smear the butter on one side of both bread slices, put buttered side down add cheese slice/jelly/ cheese slice... other bread on top with buttered side up and flip when bottom is toasted. Everything gotta be melted and jelly warmed. also smear the jelly on, don't put it down in chunks. TRUST ME!!
