Ibn al-Imad al-Hanbali said about him: “The Imam Fakhr al-Din al-Razi, the eminent scholar Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Umar ibn Husayn al-Qurashi al-Tabaristani by origin, the Shafi’i exegete and theologian, author of famous works. He was born in the year 544 AH, studied under his father the Imam Diya’ al-Din, preacher of Rayy and author of Muhyi al-Sunna al-Baghawi. Fakhr al-Din was of medium height, robust in build, with a large beard, a resonant voice, possessing dignity and solemnity, with wealth, slaves, fine attire, and a handsome appearance. When he rode, about three hundred students of various pursuits accompanied him— in exegesis, jurisprudence, theology, principles, medicine, and more. He was the unique one of his era and the theologian of his time, granted success in his compositions, which spread across regions. Ibn Abi Usaybi’ah said about him: “He is the Imam Fakhr al-Din Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Umar ibn al-Husayn al-Razi, the foremost of the later scholars and the master of the modern philosophers. His leadership became widespread, and his compositions and students spread across the horizons. When he rode, about three hundred students—jurists and others—walked around him. Khwarazmshah would come to him. He was extremely diligent in all religious and philosophical sciences, of excellent natural disposition, sharp-minded, eloquent in expression, highly skilled, strong in medical science and its discussions, knowledgeable in literature, and he composed poetry in Persian and Arabic. He had a robust body, medium height, a large beard, and majesty in his voice. He delivered sermons in his city of Rayy and in other lands, speaking from the pulpit with various kinds of wisdom. People came to him from distant regions and migrated to him from every direction with diverse pursuits in the sciences and specializations. Al razi said at the end of his life “"I have employed all the methods of philosophy and systems of theology, but I did not find in them the benefit equal to the benefit I derived from the recitation of the Great Qur'an." And then Ibn Taymiyyah quotes these lines of poetry to show that al-Razi finally admitted the failure of the rationalist path: The end of the bold advance of the intellect is a knot (limitation), and most of the efforts of the scholars are misguidance. Our souls are in a state of alienation from our bodies, and the sum of our worldly life is but harm and bane. We have not profited from our lifelong research, except that we gathered therein: 'it was said' and 'they said.'"
