No breed is a “bad dog for a first time owner” people just choose the wrong breed for their first dog. My first dog is a poodle (though I’ve kept and handled a rescue for years before, she’s my mums not mine). You need a breed that you know you can care for, train, and give appropriate life for. For some people that’s a mal or GSD. For others, it’s a greyhound and for another group that might be a golden retriever.

A dog with drive and that knows what it needs and wants is far easier than ones who don’t this is a hill I will die on I was never a dog person until I started living with my partners GSD I was worried he’d be too much and annoying as a cat person but he’s great and so simple and straightforward compared to mixes I’ve grown up with or met. A mixed dog with complete opposite instincts is going to be much harder because how can you for fill and know the needs of a dog that doesn’t know for itself.
