I overpay with Nationwide and it goes into a pot so it reduces my mortgage term BUT... I can use that pot if I struggle to make mortgage payments. I.e lose my job etc. I've about 3 years worth of 'pot' money.

So paying a lump sum before my rate switches from 1.44% to 3.96% is a no brainer, pretty much. Yes?

I’d like to overpay but NatWest make it annoying you can only do it via a debit card on their site also notifying the joint account holder every time. Seem to be the only lender who does that & we are stuck with them on fixed for another 18m. 😒

Why are there repayment penalties?

NatWest mortgages still allow 20% over payments when nearly all the others are 10%. Switching to them 10 years ago allowed us to hammer the mortgage with overpayments.

We over paid saved as much as we could and the feeling of being mortgage free is better than any investment gains as we made more by investing after mortgage was paid by compounding all savings after.

We were lucky enough to be left a small amount of money from a relative and we opted to pay off some of the mortgage. The bank was not happy. They called me in the office there and then. 👍😂

I have paid off my mortgage and that is despite the fact I would have been better off saving and investing that money. I don’t regret it though. Fact is I sleep better at night knowing that my house is mine and no debt is secured on it.

NatWest allows you to overpay by 20% each April before penalties. We’re 15yrs into our mortgage and reaping the benefits of regularly over paying during the last 10yrs.
