How much money do fishermen actually make off giant tuna? Pop culture has made everyone believe that tuna fishing is insanely lucrative. The reality is most giant tuna fishermen who don’t charter or supplement their income with something else aren’t making money off it. Bluefin Tuna logistics are some of the hardest fish to catch. You need expensive rods, reels, hooks, line, bait, and most importantly a well maintained boat. After gas your fixed cost could be as much as $500 before your lines even hit the water. But if you catch a fish at least it’ll be worth it right? Wrong. Bluefin price can be as low as $2 a pound in peak summer here in New England. It can be as high as $12 in the early and late season, but even then it’s nowhere near what people think it is. Why then, is tuna so expensive at the retail level? Well that’s because handling tuna is difficult and labor intensive. Right when that tuna gets landed someone needs to offload it typically with a forklift or crane of some sort. It needs to be loaded into a refrigerated truck and then chilled before being transported to a master distributor, who typically loins it up and sells it at the retail level. Meaning by the time you get the tuna it’s changed hands several times via skilled labor and processing - all of which is absolutely necessary to make sure you can get your nice little piece of loin. Eat fresh local tuna when it’s in season!
