@philosophyminis: I wrote in the piece on the Mini Philosophy Substack, where I argue that there are five different types of philosopher. Which one of these are you? First, there is the Sphinx. The Sphinx questions everything but answers nothing. They'll say something like, 'why do you think that way,' until you doubt your own existence. Socrates was the ultimate sphinx, and while they might be maddening, they are also effective. They are the midwives of knowledge. Second, the Leviathan. These are those who create and live by a system philosophy. There's one book, one philosophy, one idea that governs everything they do. It might be love, or God, or duty, or personal growth, or whatever. Their one system can explain everything. Third, there's the kitsune. The kitsune is a shapeshifter. They'll say something outrageous, but then retreat to a smile and a wink. No one quite knows if they are serious. Are they a nihilist, or are they just evasive? They seem to believe everything and nothing. But like the tricksters of myth, there's a depth to their slyness. Fourth, there is the Minotaur, who is lost in the mire of human suffering, mortality, and absurdity. They never escape the labyrinth, but make a dark and resigned home within it. They have no answers, just doom, gloom, and radical acceptance, and if you listen closely, you might hear Sisyphus laughing. Finally, the Garuda is the clarifier. They want definitions before any discussion. They say, 'what do you actually mean by that?' If you offer a metaphor, or anything vague, if it can't be formalised, it's not worth debating. They love logic and rationality. So which of the five do you most identify with, or are you a shifting mixture of them all?

I think you’ve described each in such a way that any real philosopher would be embarrassed to identify with one of them. But as a philosophy teacher I think it is best to be

I’m a Minotaur Garuda. I’m deep in the absurdity of human suffering but I’m fiercely logical.

Kitsune and Garuda. They seem uncompatible, but i guess depends on the side. Kitsune when initiating, and Garuda when reacting.

Socrates was not only a sphinx, but also one of the greatest leviathans. His position is very clear:
1) it's best to know that we don't know than to pretent having knowledge we don't have. (be modest)
2) evil is but ignorance: we all do wrong when we don't know any better. (forgive and help inform instead of passing judgement and punishments)
3) wealth does not bring about excellence, but excellence brings about the best including wealth. (apply your energy for the good of all not just self)
4) care not just for wealth, health, prestige and power, but the best possible state of your soul, of your being
5) unexamined, unaware life is not worth living 🙏

I enjoyed this; I am probably the Leviathan. I also think there are probably a couple of variations: the milk snake (that imitates the coral snake), philosophy as a performance - without any ‘bite’, and the librarian, who can tell you what other philosophers think but does not take any position of their own.

I don’t think I fit any of these archetypes. I’d say I’m a “Changeling” perhaps, since don’t live my life after some of the ideas I’ve logically accepted. I don’t live like I don’t have free will, even though I’m a hard determinist etc.
