This is way over simplified, because of the alliance system a general war would broken out from any spark. If you really want to blame anyone I’d say it’s Russia. Their backing of Serbia was going to expand the war. I will say Germany’s advance into Belgium brought England into the war

What about the entangling alliances? Why it became a World War..

WW1 was basically a Western standoff after two rivals got in a fight, then a buddy of the guy that started it, shoots one of the other rivals without warning.

Do I understand how that Serbia was allies with Russia, and Russia was allies with France? Yes. Do I understand why the Germans were nervous about fighting a 2 front war? Yes. Do I understand why Germany went with the Schlieffen plan in an attempt to avoid this? Yes. Do I understand why Germany went through Belgium? Yes. Would everyone have been better off if Germany hadn't done all of this and everyone took a big deep breath and just waited a bit? Absolutely

Kaiser Wilhelm was a man baby with some serious mother issues, and enormously envious of his royal cousins. The Austrians would not have gone to war without his support.

The reparations that France paid from the 1871 Franco Prussian War were on par with the Treaty of Versailles.

Yeah the claim they had to invade Belgium cuz of the entangling alliances is weak sauce. They really wanted to reclaim territories they lost to France in a previous war.

Could you settle an argument for me? In your education opinion, do you think WW2 would have happened if Germany was treated more favorably during the Treaty of Versailles?

Dan Morgan :
The Germans extracted more "reparations" them they had to pay from treaty obligations.

I just finished an excellent book you might be interested in, " on a knife edge, how Germany lost the first world war " written by a German author for Germans, it provides really interesting perspective from the other side that we generally don't get in English speaking histories.

This ignores the imperialism, relationships and events leading up to the actual war. Morocco crisis, Fighting in North Africa and the Balkans and more. History between France and Germany with Alsaise and Franco Prussian War. Empires wanting to grab colonies for resources and man power to supply their industries and capitalist. We see how the working class suffered the greatest across all empires. There was no bad and good guy I feel in this war. Just a system of powerful entities all fighting for global hegemony above the others. Seems oversimplified

Also ALSO The Treaty of Versailles was by far the most lenient Post-WW1 treaty among the defeated states. The Ottoman Empire straight up ceased to exist. Russia collapsed in to revolution and civil war and Austria-Hungary disintegrated. The victorious powers were intentionally lenient on Germany because they wanted to maintain a balance of power in central europe

If I’m not mistaken it’s not seen by historian as actually leading to the sort of conditions in Weimar that let the fascists rise, but would it be a fair analysis that opposition to Versailles by both the left and right contributed toward cultural appreciation for fascism?

Shouldn’t Russia also bear some responsibility for the regional conflict turning into a world war?

I don’t really agree. Even if you if you ignore the fact that Germany was not the sole nation that caused WWI. I don’t think you can dismiss the very real disillusionment regular Germans felt after the war. Both due to loss of national pride, and the plummeting of their standard of living. Obviously, that doesn’t justify what happened next. But you’d be a bit pretentious to act as if the average German didn’t have anything to be angry about.

If anything I think this whole Germany caused WWI is exceptionally pop history nonsense. It ignores the very real and important roles played by Russia and their ally, France. France, not obvious natural allies with the Czar still made that alliance in part because of their own belligerence and their imperialist wants.
