the energy doesn't come from the act of the piston moving down, it comes from the compression forcing molecules closer together which reduces it's atomic potential energy between atoms which is given off at hear or 'movement'

yes this is all wrong. If it were correct then the rate at which the piston moved would be critical. It is not! The temperature changes result energy volume/ density relationship changes!

the explanation for the increase in temperature being because of the collision with the piston seems off to me. You get the same increase in temperature in a fixed volume cylinder with the air coming from outside. I always assumed it had to to with the same amount of energy taking up less space. Anyone who knows physics who would like to clarify for me?

This is how diesel engines work. The piston compresses the air to such a high temperature that the fuel ignites upon injection, which is why they dont need a spark

This is wrong, the thermodynamics can be modeled with the equation PV=NT, which says nothing about the piston’s velocity. Said another way, N is number of particles so N =PV/T => Volume goes down so Pressure and Temperature must go up as well.

Air is naturally cooler when it’s denser, that’s how forms of matter work, however AC/Freezers and diesel engines work off this same concept, the diesel engine increases/decreases compression at an intense rate which is why the temperature rises, but when air is steadily compressed it gets colder, hence why cold air intake/turbo/superchargers exists, it all has to do with how fast you’re compressing your air

And how are you going to crank the lever when the pressure is too great for you to do so? Pressure also adds resistance, as pressure builds it will become more and more difficult to add force to compress the air.
