Sales tax is a state by state thing and usually food is exempt unless it's prepared at a restaurant

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no state sales tax at all, which means groceries and clothes are completely untaxed. Beyond those, some states exempt essentials even though they still have sales tax—states like Minnesota, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania don’t tax most clothing, and places like Texas, Florida, and California exempt groceries.

Grocery tax in my state is only 1.2%. A $2 item will be $2.02-$2.20 after tax

I worked a whole career in nonprofit management in the U.S., so this is interesting. If an American organization is classified by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation, it is considered tax-exempt and doesn’t pay sales tax. If I was buying something for my workplace to use, I presented a card to the cashier and no sales tax was charged. I guess this works differently in the UK because how would the cashier know what portion of the price was the sales tax/VAT?

In my state, taxes are 6% on top of the sticker price and grocery store food is exempt (not prepared food tho). It’s not that much. That’s how we fund roads, parks, garbage service, police, etc.

It’s like w everything. Some things are more expensive and some things are cheaper. Rental car? Cheaper in the UK. Utilities? America. Food is about the same

In Illinois food tax is less than 2%. Other taxes are around 7-8%.

The tax is not enough to make that big a difference. The highest sales tax in some of the states is 7% so if you buy something for $10 it’s actually $10.70.

I think you're exaggerating the sales tax a bit. 30 cents on a $2 item is 15%. Sales taxes are more like 4-8% in most states.
