i truly need the anti marriage “it’s just paper” crowd to understand that marriage comes with a lot of rights to your partner that just being together for years does not have. common law isn’t a thing in most places anymore 😭

That “ piece of paper “ is supposed to protect you both in cases of medical reasons or death. Most states don’t recognize common law marriages and even then it’s not enough.

When I did reception for a doctor, one of his patients died while on vacation with his long time partner (30+years). They would not let the partner take his body back home to the states because they weren’t married🥺. The partner had to wait for the daughter (legal next of kin) to bring the body back home. Paperwork does matter.

When my brother died last year he had been with his girlfriend for 22 years. I had to give authorization to release his body and sign certain papers at the funeral home. Unfortunately, his girlfriend had no standing.

This is why I could never get the „it’s just a piece of paper” argument. I had someone argue with me about POA is better and it’s like, that’s a lot of extra steps when you could just get legally married!! So many people have fought for the right to marry and have legal rights to their spouse, it’s important if that’s where your life is headed with your partner!

Marriage is a contract. Not just a piece of paper. That being said it gives you many rights you otherwise wouldn’t normally have. THAT BEING SAID, if you fill out paperwork to make your partner your Health Proxy and POA you are afforded (many-not all) of the same rights.

I used to work in foreclosures and we’d have the long term girlfriend calling saying she was the borrower’s common law wife (not a thing in NY) AND the man’s actual legal wife calling 😳

"Marriage is just a piece of paper" That's the point. Marriage is a legally binding contract. It has never and will never be about love or romance. You can literally marry ANYONE outside of your family, NEVER having to be romantically involved. Glorifying a literal legal term is genuinely wild to me. If you dont want access to records of someone you claim you're "in love with," you were never in love with them to begin with
