Depending on the state, would common law marriage help the girlfriend?

He had 20 years to make a will or marry her and he didn’t. The kids get it fair and square.

Nope. Not a dime. Every year when open enrollment comes along, you go over beneficiaries. He didn’t put her as one for a reason, especially after 20 yrs.

I would do a 40%,40% split and then 20% to the girlfriend she can give whatever to her daughter

If they’ve been together 20 years and he wanted her to get money then he would have put it in the will.

He doesn’t morally owe but the dad was wrong to not take care of a woman he was with 20 years. Unless they spoke about it, and she knew.

After 20 years together… I think the girlfriend deserves at least a little bit. It’s not like she was around for a year or 2. 20 years is a very long time to have combined everything & then get nothing simply bc they didn’t get married

He should have had a policy where she was the beneficiary knowing he has heirs otherwise.

In 20 years if your dad wanted her to have money, then he should’ve made those arrangements if he didn’t spend the money is yours and you have no obligation to give her any

My dad was not married to his girl friend but made massive provisions in his will for his girlfriend in his will leaving her a life estate of his home, basically making us deal with her for so far another 20+ years and counting. So in short, if he wanted her to have something he would have put it in writing

In my country if it wasn't stated in a will, it would go to her, not the kids.
But anyway in this instance they should give her something.... how much that is probably depends on the amount left behind 🤷♂️When my mum's husband passed away, she wasn't in the will but HIS kids actually got together and gave her 100k

My mom had a boyfriend for 18 years before he passed. Luckily he updated his will and left my mom the house.
