Tried desperately to shop at local artisan shops. They were NEVER open. I tried one leather purse atelier 4 times. Multiple factors are at play here.

But let’s also call it like it is: Florentines don’t buy local. Even in places where these small shops still exist (like Santo Spirito) the owners happily admit what without tourism they wouldn’t stand a chance to survive. The average Florentine (like everywhere around the world) prefers comfort of getting everything in one place and low prices over local shopping. It’s sad, but it’s the world we live in. The cheese monger in Via de’ Serragli and the Fiaschetteria next door are great examples. Go talk to the owners and they will tell you that losing tourists will be the end of their business.

Is it over tourism, or is it that these are artisan sellers who can’t just “pass on” the business to the next generation. Or maybe there isn’t a new generation to even take over , due to shrinking population.

it's definitely time for The tourists to get out of Florence and visit some of the smaller villages throughout Tuscany. Chiusi, the village I live in has a great "Pop Up Shop" program in the summer where they give people free rent to open stores.

I was a student in Florence in the 80s and I remember going back to visit and seeing a Disney store near the duomo and I was so sad to see all these changes. I remember being near Santo Spirito and seeing cobbler and leather makers working. That’s what it must’ve been like hundreds of years ago and there it was. How sad.

I feel like this is the case in most European cities. I live in Italy, but whether I go to the Netherlands or Budapest, it’s mostly all Zara, H&M, Sephora… it’s all the same!!

I’ve tryied to open a small business in Florence around 5-7 years ago… I had no chance… taxes and rent were insane! So, I’m very happy they closing down; Italians ( I’m Italian) don’t want young artisans develops, they are happy to rent their spaces to cheap turistic spots 🤷🏼♂️. I live in Germany now, best choose ever !
