As a no sabo kid, this made me cry. I FEEL my heritage but I can’t speak it (my parents were horribly discriminated and wanted their kids to never experience it). I’m trying to learn Spanish, at 38, to try and keep more of my heritage with me and try to pass it down to my children so it doesn’t get completely lost.

Nobody talks about how this reality exists because of older gen Mexicans claiming that we're not "real" Mexicans. Our culture has become a competition amongst our own people and it's exhausting having to prove myself to the white man AND my relatives. We are so accepting of other people trying to learn Spanish, but 'no sabo' kids get made fun of for not already knowing it.
