In the Chinese version, the godmother is a fish, but the stepmother kills it and eats it, then the girl keeps the bones and they grant her wish to get dressed up including silk slippers to go to the ball

it's not the "original" Cinderella story. the thing is, the fairy tale with same basic plot line had existed in various cultures, at various times. even in ancient Egypt there was a similar tale, only of course with Pharaoh and golden sandal. so, there is really not a single source where that story could be adopted from.
