for me what Jon wanted to do IS what happened, that was perfect for Shane, he was missunderstood, broken bc of how Lori treated him after Rick came back. Yes, he was in love with his bestfriend's wife, but he waited till he thought Rick was gone (and he really tried to save him,he did what he could). He finnaly had a family, a family that he loved and loved him, he kept them save, but then Lori threw him away like trash.

It would have made sense imo, Shane was so mentally gone to the point- I could see him staging something like the field scene to be able to make Rick man up to ensure the long term safety of Lori and Carl, even if it meant shanes life being taken
