Today, we celebrate National Senior Citizens Day and recognize the generations of Marylanders whose hard work, sacrifice, wisdom, and dedication helped build the communities we know and love today. 🇺🇸💛 Our seniors have spent their lives raising families, serving their communities, building businesses, paying taxes, and contributing to Maryland in countless ways. Many have lived here for decades—and some come from families whose roots in Maryland go back generations. But celebrating our seniors also means listening to them. As I travel across Maryland, I am hearing directly from seniors who are struggling with the rising cost of living, property taxes, healthcare, groceries, utilities, and other everyday expenses. Changes enacted through Maryland's 2025 tax legislation, including reductions in the value of the Senior Tax Credit for some taxpayers, have added to the financial uncertainty many older Marylanders are already feeling. What concerns me most are the conversations with seniors who tell me they are now considering leaving Maryland because they are no longer sure they can afford to stay. Imagine spending most of your life here—or having a family that has called Maryland home for generations—and feeling that the only way to protect your retirement and financial security is to leave the state you helped build. That should concern all of us. Our seniors should not have to choose between remaining close to their families and communities and finding a place where they can afford to live. Maryland must take seriously the cumulative impact that taxes, fees, housing costs, and other financial pressures are having on people living on fixed and retirement incomes. On National Senior Citizens Day, I am proud to celebrate Maryland's seniors and thank them for everything they have given to our state. But gratitude must be more than words. Their experiences must be heard, their financial security must matter, and Maryland should remain a place where they can afford to stay and enjoy the legacy they helped create.
