Spend ur free time planning and working towards a grand adventure for right after you graduate. I left for the PCT 24 hrs after turning in my last exam of college, and I had a bunch of friends who went on multi-month road trips after graduating. Also, you can be a park ranger (or something else in the outdoor realm), even if your degree isn’t super related. I was a history major at a school w no academic programming for outdoor/parks & rec stuff. See if you can get a job w your school’s outdoor rec department (a lot of colleges will hire students to lead trips, work at the climbing wall, do equipment rentals, etc). And/or, guide seasonally on your summer breaks. I started working for my university’s outdoor rec center just to make some extra money and ended up realizing that there was a legitimate path forward in the outdoor rec industry for me. Got a full time job in an office of an outdoor company (that has really good connections) a month after the PCT, and now I’ve accepted an outdoor recreation grad assistantship and will be getting paid to get my master’s in recreation admin. Basically, I’m trying to get at: depending how you play your cards, school and an outdoorsy job don’t have to be antithetical. Anyway, good luck, stranger!

If you can take a gap year, or work a seasonal outdoor job do it! Go while you’re healthy and able. I became severely disabled at 25 and I’m so glad I took a break from school to spend a year in New Zealand before that. If I had put it off, I wouldn’t be able to do it now.

Using college to get to this life is what got me through it. If I stayed in construction I would either be too tired or working to do this. I now work just under 40 hours for more money and I get to do this stuff with my family
