I have a theory about this. Only a theory and I'd love for someone smarter to confirm if it's true. The big bang was the creation of PHYSICAL matter, and prior to the big bang there was a point before physical matter, but that doesn't mean there was NOTHING. Gravity is the curvature of space/time, which means that time is a feature of physical matter. If this is true, then prior to the big bang there was a point without time and cause and effect. Presumable a state quantum in nature. If this is true then this, or is close to, the end of the thread and the solution to infinite regress. If this is true, there is an end to "A was created by B, then C and D" and so on. I predict that if we truly knew what reality was before the big bang it would be far more strange than any God.
