@koi.mood: The history of the Gullah people begins on the Sea Islands of South Carolina, where much of their ancestry can be traced back to the “Rice Coast,” a collection of countries along the western coast of Africa whose people had extensive knowledge of rice farming, a new and lucrative market in South Carolina at the time. Over time, due to the isolation of the islands, the people and cultures of Sierra Leone, Angola, Liberia, Ghana, and the Ivory Coast, among others, melded into one distinct community that became known as the Gullah Geechee. Despite being one of, if not THE, oldest African American cultures in the United States, it is also one of the few that has been able to retain its history, language, and cultural traditions over centuries. From the annual Gullah Geechee Heritage Festival in St. Augustine, to the tradition of painting doors and ceilings “haint blue” for protection, to the sacred Ring Shout ritual, Gullah language and traditions continue to live on today through its people in the Lowcountry of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Black culture isn’t a monolith. There are so many cultures and identities that make up black America. This BHM I wanted to learn more about the subgroups within Black America and the history behind them. Today is for the Gullah Geechee people. *We all know the internet lies so if there’s any misinformation I apologize in advance* #blackhistorymonth #blackculture #soulaan #gullahgeechee #lowcountry

I love Gullah Geechee folks. If I wasn't Haitian, I would want to be a Gullah Geechee woman ❤️

Hi my love! The woman in all white is from the Santeria faith. They are close to us in many ways, but I do believe she is (Afro-)Brazilian 💖 I found this out as I had also used her as a hoodoo reference for myself earlier
