When I started sharing some pictures of my roadtrip through South Louisiana online, people who grew up in the area commented about how when they were there they could only ever think about leaving, and now they miss it. But they had to leave. It was their only option. Some people who still live there expressed their love for their home and their concerns with how it’s all going to change with the data centers being built on their land. One person reached out to share that he’d moved to Spain over a year ago, and that some of the photos made him cry. That was really special. Driving around all by myself, was a serene and peaceful experience that I’ll always remember. The fields seem endless. Everything is incredibly grand and alive, yet there are stretches where you can feel completely alone. Buildings are abandoned or slowly being reclaimed, and beautiful. It has meant a lot to hear that these photographs have helped people reconnect, even briefly, with a place they had to leave behind. As I keep making pictures, I realize that’s a big reason why I take pictures. To document and archive the world, my life and those around me, of course, but also, to fill a void of missing home. It starts with recognizing something familiar, something that reminds me of “home”. Glimpses of tenderness, spots where faith once was, or still is, or landscapes that remind me of rural Mexico. And capturing its light. And keeping it with me.
