you really just need the wood ash, scoop some into your hands with water and start scrubbing. The lye in the wood ash will react with fats in and on the skin creating the saponification needed for cleansing. Hardwood ash is best.

All of this knowledge is lost. All the stories from the hardworking people of the past are lost. The only stories that get told are those of the wealthiest people not that they did any hard work they sat and people did it for them. Simple things like soap or a cleanser equals skin protection. The ash is medicine and the fat is a skin barrier.
