@mykkesigler: Russia's state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, has unveiled a revolutionary plasma rocket engine prototype capable of slashing the travel time to Mars from the typical 300 days to just 30 to 60 days. Developed by scientists at the Troitsk Institute, the engine uses magnetic plasma accelerators to propel charged particles (hydrogen ions) at speeds of up to 100 km/s (approx. 223,000 mph)—far exceeding the 4.5 km/s limit of conventional chemical rockets. The prototype, which is currently undergoing testing in a massive vacuum chamber, operates in a "pulse-periodic" mode with an average power of 300 kW. While the engine produces a relatively modest thrust of about 6 Newtons, its ability to maintain continuous acceleration over long durations allows it to achieve the immense velocities needed for rapid interplanetary travel. Rosatom plans to have a flight-ready version of the engine by 2030, potentially positioning Russia as a leader in deep space exploration and offering a solution to the radiation risks associated with long-duration crewed missions. #Russia #Rosatom #Mars #SpaceTravel #PlasmaEngine
