@cher.spirit: These habits look weird but they work because they speak the language your nervous system actually understands. #nervoussystem #somatictherapy #traumahealing #vagusnerve #selfhelpbook
Named my anxiety Kevin. So if I can feel it bubbling I mutter “not today Kevin”

One of my teachers in college taught me the pressing trick because I would get anxious talking in class (very small school/class size) and fidget so much that it was distracting and I also was obviously having a bad time. He told me instead of bouncing my legs, to press my feet into the floor/my butt into the seat of my chair to feel more grounded, present, and centered. Changed my life, tbh— 20 years later, I still do this every day

talking nicely to my water before I take a sip, studies have showed that the cells in water react to both negative & positive makes me feel like my water is happy to hydrate me

If you need to take deeper breaths, start with the exhale first. Push all the air out before trying to take more air in. Let go to receive. Breathing in is inherently activating and breathing out is calming. Focus on the exhales and let the inhale just happen. Then if that feels ok, Focus on pressing the breath out by pulling the belly in and then drawing the inhale deeper down by expanding the belly out. This helps stimulate diaphragmatic breathing. Shallow breathing is such a hard thing to shift but these things helped me after years of anxious breathing.

I was freaking out in an MRI machine last week and I didn’t want to hit the call button again so I just repeated over and over “you’re so brave, look at you being so brave, you’re so brave” - so much fear comes from the five year old part of me, and reassurance out loud like that always seems to work ❤️

Self-soothing like talking to myself aloud “it’ll be okay” or “it’s okay to feel sad” really helps me.

Humming helps so much. Another thing I do is press my thumb against each of the 4 fingers on the same hand individually. I’m very elemental and it’s like grounding into the elements for me. I can feel it move up my arms and into my body stabilizing me.

I imagine my future self thanking my present self for doing tasks that are mundane/boring. I make it a point to thank my past self for doing it too!

I sleep surrounded by pillows. A heavy one behind me pressed up against my back. I have had much less nervous system dysregulation ever since.

Humming is my go to. I don’t even realize I’m doing it. And it’s always “If I Only Had a Brain.” 😂

I had resisted EFT/tapping for decades, and just recently tried it. I love it. I do just the tapping and don't worry about affirmations. It just feels good.
