I’m back!!!! Taking everyone to cuke school today. 👩‍🏫So question: How do you know if a cucumber is at peak level for eating and how do you select the perfect cucumber? I ran by the store yesterday evening and grabbed a couple cucumbers for today and trusted that the cukes would be good. While they aren’t terrible, I didn’t check them like I normally do and it shows. What’s your routine? For me, I have a system. Number 1: I generally always choice the cukes that are wrapped in plastic. Less hands touch them and they are generally better than your typical garden variety cucumbers at the store. Number 2: I look at color. A good cucumber has a nice green color and a firm skin. Not too dark and not too light. A wrinkled cuke is likely over ripe. Number 3 and most important: squeeze those ends! If it smooshes easy, you do not want it. As cukes ripen, the ends get softer. You want a cuke with firm ends. Number 4 (once you get it home): cut into your cuke. A cuke at it’s peak ripeness will look solid with a whiter inside. As they ripen, they become transparent. This is not a cuke you want. Trust me. If you happen upon an over ripe cuke, you can smother it in seasonings and it will suffice, but a cuke at peak ripeness will be so good you really won’t need any seasoning if you truly like the taste of a cuke. Also, I prefer the wrapped skinny cukes because they have a mild flavor and less pronounced seeds so that means less belching. 🫢 A good cuke can last roughly a week in the refrigerator (I like mine cold), whereas an overly ripe cuke my only last a day or so. Fortunately they last longer than bananas but a bad cuke always ruins my day. 😓 I hope this info helps those out searching for cuke perfection! 🌈 The more you know! 😁♥️🥒
