I’m far too Australian for this, but I can try to break it down for the anti sunscreen crowd. The idea that our ancestors didn’t get skin cancer is untrue for a myriad of reasons. Firstly, the two most common (and slow growing) types of skin cancer are directly related to your age. As the thought is that initial sun exposure set it off but your skin losing its ability to repair itself as you get older gives you the cancer (this is a slight oversimplification). Due to the fact people often would die earlier they didn’t have the ‘chance’ to develop these forms. Melanoma (the faster growing and more aggressive form of cancer that people traditionally associate skin cancer with) can be directly tied to sun exposure. However things like a family history, age or having lighter skin play a smaller role as well. Due to things like a lack of awareness around it, earlier deaths, testing or treatment not being invented or being too dangerous etc there were less diagnoses. Slightly off topic but it has a 99% chance of survival if caught in the first stage so if anyone has an inkling that they have a ‘weird looking thing’ on their skin I would highly recommend seeing a dermatologist. You may say well it is essential to have some form of sunlight and you would 100% be correct. However sunlight contains UV rays and that’s the skin cancer causing part of being in the sun too much without protection. Sunscreen is just one part of Sun protection. The phrase Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide. As in slip on clothing that covers your body, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shelter and slide on sunglasses can be used. There is no evidence showing that sunscreen causes skin cancer or that the risk related to cancer from not wearing sunscreen outweighs the rare chance of a bad reaction to sunscreen. I understand that many people might have a personal lack of health literacy and because of this I’m happy to answer any questions :)
