I made an amorphous monster that disguised itself as grass and hurt you only if you stood on it, it had a speed of 5 ft. My players escaped with 2 members down and the final survivor at 6 HP.

I’m a new dm and newish to dnd, made a homebrew world, and I’m using homebrew monsters mixed with actual monsters, so far I have had no issues balancing encounters. I buff my players with things that make sense, so I can throw stuff at them that feels oppressive.

I made a giant gator species, called it “titanogator,” that’s the size of a school bus (in height and length), and its baby that’s the same build and size of a panda cub. The whole point of it is to mimic the Bewear and Stufful running gag from the Alola “Pokémon” series.

I made an ancient greatdemidracolich wyrm… thing. Idk. Either way. It made the warlock useless since they couldn’t use eldritch blast. It was great. Honestly the first balanced encounter I’ve run for them in years.
