@nepalinreel: The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, has been live-streamed for free on the ICC’s official website since Saturday. However, Nepali users have reported that a local platform, Styx Nepal, is charging Rs 399 to watch the same matches. Despite Nepal being a participating nation, and ICC providing free live streaming with Nepali commentary for Nepal’s matches, Styx Nepal has introduced a paid model through its mobile app and website. According to the ICC’s official website, Kantipur Television holds the broadcast (linear TV) rights for Nepal. However, there is no clear mention of any Nepali entity holding exclusive or co-exclusive digital streaming rights, and Styx Nepal is not listed among ICC’s authorized digital partners. Styx Nepal’s Managing Director Shishir Pachhai initially claimed the company had obtained a sub-license from Kantipur TV, but later stated that the streaming rights were acquired directly from ICC. Although he promised to provide documentary proof, none had been submitted at the time of publication. Responding to criticism, Pachhai argued that Styx Nepal is trying to establish sports content platforms in Nepal, and claimed that ICC TV’s streaming quality is inadequate. He also said ICC had sold “co-exclusive rights” for Nepal. However, independent testing showed that ICC TV streams function smoothly with no quality issues. Furthermore, ICC had earlier clarified that it sought non-exclusive media rights for Nepal and that Kantipur TV holds only linear broadcasting rights, raising further doubts over Styx Nepal’s claims. Interestingly, match posters shared by Kantipur Television list Styx Nepal as a digital streaming partner, adding to the confusion. Efforts have been made to obtain an official response from ICC regarding Styx Nepal’s rights and the legality of charging users, but no response had been received at the time of publishing.
