The original palace of the Asantehene in Kumasi was built from earth, stone, and timber and served as the home of Otumfuo Nana Agyeman Prempeh I between 1888 and 1896. It was one of the most important places in the Asante Kingdom, where the king lived, met his chiefs, and made important decisions about the kingdom. The palace was built in the traditional Asante style, with large courtyards, decorated walls, audience halls, and private royal chambers. The audience hall was where the Asantehene received visitors, settled disputes, discussed state matters, and held meetings with chiefs and foreign representatives. In January 1896, British forces entered Kumasi and arrested Prempeh I. To protect his people and the city from destruction, he chose not to fight. After his arrest, he was sent into exile, first to Sierra Leone and later to the Seychelles Islands. Before his exile, the British destroyed the original palace. The destruction of the palace was a major blow to Asante authority because it had long been the center of political and cultural life in the kingdom. Many royal treasures and important objects were also removed during this period. The palace no longer exists today, but its memory remains an important part of Asante history. In 1925, after Prempeh I returned from exile, a new palace called Manhyia Palace was built in Kumasi. It continues to serve as the official residence of the Asantehene and stands as a symbol of the strength and survival of the Asante Kingdom.
