This painting, titled La Miseria, was made in 1886 by the Venezuelan artist Cristóbal Rojas. Interestingly, this is the first time we analyze a work by an artist from Venezuela. Without touching on the present day, it’s still a scene many people can recognize. A man in a worn jacket sits beside a bed. He leans slightly forward, staring into nothing. His expression is torn apart. One hand reaches toward the mattress, where the body of a woman lies. Her skin is pale. Her chest is uncovered. The room is modest. A metal bed. Threadbare sheets. Dirty walls. A wooden floor. Everything points to hardship. The title makes it clear: this couple lives in poverty, and the artist wants you to see it. The woman is dead. Her color and rigid pose say it plainly. The man, who likely stayed with her through days or months of illness, is thinking about everything he could not do. A doctor. Better treatment. Medicine. If money had not been a problem, she might still be alive. This reading is personal. Rojas never explained the painting. But the context and the man’s expression make one thing clear: misery, not fate, is what killed his wife. La Miseria, 1886 Painted by Cristóbal Rojas #art
