@historywithmegs: One of the best preserved medieval guild halls in the world!!! 🤯 (gifted visit) Construction first began on the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall in 1357 when a group came together to form a religious fraternity. The Hall was built as a meeting place in York - somewhere to worship and give charity to the poor. 🧺 The majority of the members were merchants and mercers and they soon formed a guild together! ⚜️ The history of the Hall itself stretches back even further than the 14th century though, as it is built on the foundations of a Norman mansion house. 😯 Excavations around the site have also found artefacts of Viking provenance too. The building comprises an undercroft (used as a hospital from 1373-1900), a great hall, and several anterooms and a governor’s parlour. The site also houses a chapel, built in 1420, that is still in use today - as I filmed these clips a lady stopped me to tell me her daughter is getting married here - how amazing?! 🥹 The Hall houses many objects of historical interest, including medeival chests and furniture as well as some beautiful paintings. An oak ‘evidence’ chest dating from the early 14th century is housed in the governor’s parlour and a portrait of Henrietta Maria after Van Dyck is on show in the hall. Incredibly, the Hall is still owned by the organisation that founded it and besides castles, churches, and barns, it is the largest English building of this age.🥰 I would definitely recommend a visit here if you’re in York - the staff are so lovely and helpful and there is a super audio guide too!
