@anonym62992: I mean people of other nationalities, when I tell them. And stop justifying this, because I don’t care what you say. it’s still wrong. 1. The bride’s parents do not attend the wedding. 2. During the celebration, the groom is not allowed to be seen by the relatives, especially older men. The custom of avoidance is a tribute to Chechen traditions: in public, a husband and wife cannot openly show their feelings. That’s why a separate table is set for the groom and his friends in another room. 3. The situation is different for the bride. Among Chechens, a wedding is called “zuda guchuyakkhar”, which literally means “to show the bride.” During the wedding, she stands in a designated place — on a small podium decorated with flowers. Anyone can openly look at her and take photos with her. The most the bride herself is allowed to do is remain silent and smile modestly. Only the ritual of “untying the tongue” gives her the right to speak. This ritual is performed by men: they ask the bride for water and permission to drink it. She says only one word: “Drink.” The guest drinks the water and, returning the empty glass, gives her money. After that, the bride is allowed to talk to those who “untied” her tongue. All the money collected during this ritual must be given by the daughter-in-law to her mother-in-law. 4. Visits to her parents The young wife is not allowed to visit her parental home until “official” visits there are made by her new relatives. #noxchi #feminism #ihatebasicpeople #chechengirl #chechnya

Absolutely not. This isn’t culture it’s patriarchy wrapped in a bow and fancy clothes. She will be the one carrying the household yet he gets more freedoms? Disgusting. Let’s call out culture and patriarchy and break the cycle.

Women in all cultures suffer. It’s sad especially when they say it’s tradition or culture as if those aren’t heavily influenced by violence against women and misogyny. I feel for Chechen women and girls as an Egyptian who hears marriage horror stories everyday from women in my culture.

Tell them how they pick a bride… like literally picking one from the street and keeping her captive untill her parents agree with the marriage

My Chechen coworker told me that in Chechen tradition, the bride and groom do not exchange wedding rings with each other. Instead, the bride exchanges the ring with the groom’s mother or sister, because it is considered shameful for the couple to do it themselves.
She also explained that after the wedding, the newly married couple is not allowed to travel together to their new home. The groom is not permitted to drive the car or sit alone in the car with his wife, as this is also seen as shameful.
In addition, married couples are traditionally not allowed to sit next to each other in front of other people, especially elders or in-laws (although some families are no longer as strict about this).

It's true. My aunt is Chechen. And she recently had a wedding. The bride's relatives are not allowed to attend the wedding, and the bride is not allowed to sit, eat, or drink for the entire day. Guess how long this marriage lasted? 4 months.
