I beg to differ. Socks should always match the shoes, so there is a continuum from the feet up, not from the trouser leg down, which would instead turn into a break when reaching the shoe. Unless one is dressing casually and patterned socks are called for.

These silly rules are for women. A brown ensemble requires matching socks - something in the brown palette. I consider dark brown works best here but both work.
