There is no formal regulatory definition for the word “natural,” and the FDA is now approving a “natural” food dye called beetroot red that is not made from beetroot, but actually derived from genetically engineered yeast.  2. Dr. Makary is touting a “labeling change” as a health win. When really foods that use natural dyes have been using the “no artificial dyes” label for years. Go check out Kraft macaroni and cheese as an example. This is basically just telling industry “hey just in case you’re concerned the FDA might come after your for saying “no artificial colors” when your product contains a genetically engineered food dye, don’t be. Use the label without concern.” 3. If synthetic food dyes were shown to be as harmful as they say and pose clear risk under regulatory standards, they would be removed from the food supply, but that would require evidence. 4. Food dyes are a distraction, so this administration can point to them as evidence of action on MAHA and the food supply, while advancing pro-industry policies and cutting support for programs that actually improve population health. Note: I support food science innovation, including safe advancements like yeast-derived GE ingredients. This is not commentary on the safety of that ingredient. It is commentary on the misleading and hypocritical communication coming from HHS and MAHA leadership.
