They document one of the most famous social experiments in the history of photography. Mexican photojournalist Nacho López set out to capture the male gaze and women’s everyday experiences in public spaces. López told the young model Maty Huitrón that he had run out of film and left her “alone” on Madero Avenue. In reality, he followed her from nearby, secretly photographing the reactions of men — the stares, whistles, and comments — exactly as they happened. First published in 1953 in Siempre! magazine under the title “Cuando una mujer guapa parte plaza por Madero,” the series later gained UNESCO recognition as a key sociological photographic document of the 20th century. Years later, Maty said: “Nacho only captured the images, but if he had heard what was said to me that day, he would have understood much more.” Decades later, these photographs remain a powerful visual record of women’s presence in public spaces. #History #photography #vintage #trending #viral
