The key to growing strong, pest resistant lettuces is to give them a good start in life 🌱 I sow my lettuce into trays which enables me to protect the young seedlings from pests by keeping them out of harms way. I also make sure my lettuce has the optimal growing conditions: plenty of light and temperatures of around 15 degrees C (59 F). This encourages strong healthy growth. Without the light they become weak and leggy and if it’s too hot or too cold they grow too quickly or slowly and can be prone to flowering prematurely, which makes them taste bitter. I wait until my lettuces have a few true leaves and a good root system before planting outside (sorry I didn’t have any videos of a good sized plant with roots - will share one soon!). The small lettuces in the beds with the text “newly planted lettuce bed” were planted that day (autumn 2023), to give you an idea of size. By this point, the lettuces should be strong enough to recover from pest attacks, but their growth will be old enough not to tempt too many pests in the first place, as pests tend to be attracted to tender new growth. For those following the grow along: it’s time to sow your lettuce! Sow your lettuce 1cm deep (and no deeper as they need a little light to germinate) and water them in. I germinate my lettuce indoors where it’s about 18C before moving to the greenhouse.
