@thepainnpchenlow: “Just push through it” can be dangerous advice in chronic pain. #ChronicPain #Pacing #ChronicIllness #PushingThrough #ChronicPainLife
Can you explain this to my family? I’m trying to learn my limits and was actually told I shouldn’t expect compassion all the time

My favorite advice that I get from people is that I should just exercise more. how can I exercise when it takes everything I have in me just to walk from my car to the door of the grocery store and then I have to go through the grocery store. it's literally exhausting

I hear this a lot towards hEDS patients like myself. My mom was told that frequently in her life and it contributed to her consistent injuries, extreme pain (she had medication to treat it but we didn't know she was medication resistant), and later in life to her heart becoming enlarged. she died very suddenly at age 51 from hypertensive heart disease. They determined when they realized that her muscles look like "shredded pot roast" (their words) that something was very wrong. we found out later that she had had hypermobile EDS and had been overdoing it for years. she didn't know that she had it. Her death and the way that her pain and illnesses were handled are why I advocate the way I do. Thank you for speaking on this.

If my daughter tries to “push thru it” she ends up with stroke symptoms and then hospitalized for up to 10 days…so scary as she had a hemorrhagic stroke in 2013.

As a Chronic Pain patient thank you for this. I am doing this now pacing my way through it. This makes me think of the Spoon Theory I have been using this for a while!

Pain is a terrible cycle. Stress gave me pain, which made me lose sleep, which triggered constant migraines, which created more stress and the inability to do things, which led to more chronic pain from not being active. Breaking the cycle with medications that improved my anxiety and pain allow me to exercise again and sleep and be functional which in turn reduces my headaches and stress. You can’t “push through it”

Honestly I’ve been dealing with my pain for over 15 years and the pain keeps getting worse… I woke up the other day I couldn’t put my weight on one side because the pain was shooting up my back and into my tailbone… never experienced that pain before…. I cried because what can I do when one side of my body doesn’t work. I’m a stay at home mom and my job is to care for others and when I can’t I feel like an awful person.

Where do you practice medicine?I would love to have you look at my injuries.I have you seem like a very compassionate guy. i have severe high blood pressure from untreated pain. i had a doctor send me home when they should have called an ambulance for me.Because I had triple digits up and down and my pulse as well. my son's a nurse. He was waiting for me in the car, and I told him my blood pressure, and he took me to the hospital. i'm scared i'm not gonna wake up if I do manage to go to sleep with this pain.I need a doctor who will actually listen.🙏🙏🙏❤

Please teach these things to our young Drs. Who don’t get pain. These Drs are told what to do. Can’t think for themselves. Inexperience or just ignore. For fear of their job

Yes please help with understanding pacing. I tried to do two things last week on the same day and still haven’t recovered. I’ve rested but it was too much to try to keep going.i wish I could do things like I used to. The pain just never goes away.

I kid you not, the last doctor that told me to just push through the pain.I told him come here so I can squeeze your, you know what's and i will tell you just push push through the pane! naturally, I would never do that, but that's the way you get the point across too them If it's a male doctor because a lot of them think it's all in us.Women'. a lot of male doctors, not all have no sympathy or compassion they have a bedside manner of a wooden post. and for me, to have said it to that doctor one time I was horrific pain. but when you kind of get fed up, you have to actually make them envision what kind of pain would make them not say or you have to push through it. and that's the only thing I thought of at the time, but it was just a comment.I never did it😁 but it did get my message across!
