Think you’re too young for perimenopause? Your early 40s are absolutely not too early. Perimenopause doesn’t suddenly begin when you start having hot flushes. It’s the reproductive transition leading up to menopause, and for many women the first changes can begin in their 40s sometimes earlier. And the early signs can be much more subtle than people expect. Your cycle may become shorter, longer or less predictable. Ovulation may become more variable. Sleep can change. You may notice changes in mood, energy, bleeding patterns or how you respond to stress. One reason this stage can feel so confusing is that your hormones don’t simply decline in a neat, predictable line. Ovarian function becomes more variable. Oestrogen can fluctuate considerably, while progesterone exposure may change as ovulation becomes less consistent. But there’s an important distinction: symptoms in your 40s should not automatically be blamed on perimenopause. Thyroid dysfunction, iron deficiency, metabolic changes, sleep disorders, nutrient deficiencies and other health conditions can produce overlapping symptoms. That’s why I want to understand the whole clinical picture rather than simply saying, “You’re in your 40s, it must be your hormones.” This decade is an incredibly valuable time to start looking at your health proactively your nutrition, metabolic health, cardiovascular risk, bone health, sleep, movement and individual symptoms rather than waiting until you feel completely unlike yourself. Toni is our naturopath at Nourishing Apothecary with a special interest in perimenopause, menopause, thyroid health and women’s health. If things are starting to feel different and you want to understand why, you can book a free discovery call with Toni. Our clinic works with women Australia-wide via Zoom. nourishingapothecary.com #perimenopause #perimenopausesymptoms #menopause #womenshealth #hormonehealth
