There is no feminism without understanding racism. Intersectional feminism is the only way to go.

I read a bumper sticker of all things that said “White women are the men of women” and I felt that so deeply

they would also have to grapple with the fact that historically and in present day they are one of the pillars that holds up the patriarchy even if they’re unaware

as a ww, I can't even comprehend deconditioning patriarchy without deconstructing racism. oppression is oppression, and you can't unravel it without truly seeing all the levers. it's so clear.

yes!!! we are constantly afraid of men, secretly or not secretly despise how they treat us, and can see things they don’t immediately! but then we can’t understand a micro aggression? why would it be functionally different??? although we’d never understand, we can TRY to get a real, complete understanding and ITS OKAY to use your own experience of oppression to try and understand something outside of yourself, and in fact that’s how actual empathy works 😭

It sucks bc understanding patriarchal systems as a ww should be a logical stepping stone to understanding white supremacist systems. I fear this + bm seeing white supremacy but not misogyny (and esp. misogynoir) will continue to be a major reason why class solidarity is unlikely

They’ll comment and like something that’s basically “yay women!!” but quick to reply “why make it about race” when something’s like “yay black people!!”

Considering how POC must experience racism the same way I experience misogyny (ie men being absolutely clueless and often times unable to understand it beyond a vague, impersonal concenpt) has been essential to unlearning my white feminism programming.

👋🏻 it’s because we love to be a victim and can’t easily conceptualize of ourselves as the oppressors. We’ve been conditioned in a victim mindset that has to be broken to see our role in racial oppression, it’s painful to absorb that shame.

we were watching the olympics yesterday and saw the backflip from Ilia. i mentioned how it had been banned because it was "too dangerous" after a black woman performed it before anyone else. i said "that was racism". and my friend was saying "she is a woman, its misogyny". so my reaction was "well yes that too. but she was a BLACK woman, they would have reacted different if she had been white. she was competing against white women, not against men" i dont know if anyone heard the last sentence, because someone else started to talk. Being able to see the patterns and strings is so important to understanding who get to do what in this world

It’s the same way trying to get them to understand that those of us effected by racism AND the patriarchy. We aren’t effected the same, but we can’t say that because, ‘no, oppression Olympics’, is the defense.

As a yt woman, racism, patriarchy, and capitalism all go hand in hand. You can’t take out one system without taking out the other. You can’t truly deconstruct one without the other.
