That dismissive
That dismissive "what's wrong with you," said with a tone that already knows the answer, is familiar territory in a relationship where speaking up rarely goes well. You're hurt, you want to be honest, but you also already know exactly how it'll play out in this relationship if you answer truthfully, so saying "nothing, I'm fine" isn't dishonesty, it's self-protection learned the hard way. The more useful move isn't finding better words, it's pausing before you answer and checking something first, is this person genuinely asking because they want to understand how you feel in this relationship, or is the question itself already a setup you've seen play out before, one that ends with your feelings picked apart from every angle. Most people, if they're honest, already know the answer, because a pattern in a relationship rarely surprises you twice. If your gut says it isn't safe, you're not obligated to hand over your feelings just to prove you're being reasonable. Trying to convince someone your feelings are valid in a relationship where they've already shown you they're not open to hearing them tends to be exhausting and rarely leads anywhere good. If it does feel safe enough to speak, staying with your own experience rather than their behaviour, saying I felt hurt, I felt affected, gives you the best chance of actually being heard. And if defensiveness or blame shows up anyway, you're allowed to say you're not doing this right now and step away. What you feel in this relationship still deserves somewhere to land, even if that somewhere, for now, is someone else entirely.
