@evansebor: Idi Amin Dada was a Ugandan military officer and politician who served as the third President of Uganda from 1971 to 1979. Born around 1925 in Koboko, Uganda, Amin joined the British colonial army, King's African Rifles, in 1946 as a cook but quickly rose through the ranks due to his physical strength and ruthlessness. He fought for the British in Kenya during the Mau Mau uprising and later in Somalia. ¹ ² ³ Amin seized power in a military coup in 1971 while President Milton Obote was attending a Commonwealth summit in Singapore. He established a brutal dictatorship, purging the army of Obote's supporters and targeting various ethnic groups, especially the Acholi and Lango. His regime was marked by widespread human rights abuses, with estimates suggesting between 100,000 to 500,000 people were killed. ⁴ Amin's rule was characterized by economic decline, corruption, and international isolation. He expelled 50,000 Asians from Uganda in 1972, leading to economic collapse. His relations with the Soviet Union enabled Uganda to acquire military weapons, but his attack on Tanzania in 1978 led to his downfall. Tanzanian forces and Ugandan rebels captured Kampala in 1979, and Amin fled to exile in Saudi Arabia, where he died in 2003. ⁵ ⁶
