Dentist here… sorry you went thru this, it sounds awful. I am usually religious with wearing a mask but I would absolutely pull down my mask for a deaf patient. And of course you should have have a written treatment plan, deaf or not!

My grandad was deaf and I had to go with him to a lot of his medical appointments because the staff just would not make even simple adaptations for him. The worst was when he missed several appointments with the audiologist, not because he didn't turn up but because he couldn't hear his name called when he was sat in the waiting room so they just assumed he wasn't there (even though he had checked in at reception on arrival and they knew he wouldn't be able to hear his name)! He was a very private person and hated me having to come with him, and I didn't like feeling like I was invading his privacy, but we were left with no other choice. We also frequently had issues with places like banks who refused to offer in person services and wanted to speak to him about things on the phone, knowing full well he couldn't hear them on the phone - we used to get told off even for having the phone on speaker so that we could sit with him and repeat what had been said so that he could actually answer their questions. It really opened my eyes to how people with disabilities are treated, even by the services who are supposed to be helping them!

dentists are a nightmare for me too. i tried using a subtitles app, dentist accused me of trying to record him and wouldnt stop hounding me until I entirely deleted the transcript 😭

As a dental assistant, I’m so deeply sorry this happened to you. The office should have provided an interpreter for you. I have many asl patients, and if they decline an interpreter, I will write out everything with pen and paper.

This is absolutely horrendous. You shouldn’t have to deal with the complaints procedure but they need to understand how discriminatory that is… medical appointments are vulnerable enough without literally not being able to understand what’s going on.

I am not totally deaf, I am deaf in one ear and struggle to hear when you're not looking at me. I get the shouting thing A LOT. Like shouting won't make me hear you any better. Slow down and LOOK at me 🥴

Honestly I would report this to the cqc this is disgraceful! During Covid I worked on a deaf ward and they used visors so idk why they can’t use transparent masks if they know they’re having someone deaf or hard of hearing that’s already made them aware of it

This is not how it should be. I have quite a few deaf patients and some lip read, some have interpreters and some we write in a note pad together whatever they are most comfortable with 🙏🏾
