@kadenwatson11: In Little Women, Greta Gerwig created a meta narrative that merged the original book, the author’s life and her own to create something relevant today. Let’s discuss! #kadensmovieclub #littlewomen #filmtok #whattowatch
Amy was the youngest!!?? I've only seen gretas version, I thought she was the 3th oldest!

Silly question but in the 1994 version, doesn’t she also accomplish both? Her book is published and she gets the man? Or am I misremembering

Greta's version was the first time I came away from the story NOT disliking Amy and Aunt March, she really explains their perspectives and in Amy's case, growth, better than the other versions I grew up on. loved it 🩷

I’ve always felt the addition of the romance for Jo at the end is not actually real but what’s happening in the book she writes - based on the feedback from the publisher. It’s saying give the audience what they want and Greta does that too but in a wink that it is only a fiction - it even returns to the warm colour tint which to me indicates that it isn’t real

I adore the movie and I think the non-linear story is the superior way to tell the story. showing the
sisters childhoods at the same time as their adulthood explains why they act the way they do. it also puts Amy in a much more sympathetic light and gives Beth more impact in the story.

First off 2019 was a great year for movies Little women, JoJo Rabbit, 1917, parasite, and so many more. I loved this movie and I never noticed the color change between childhood and adulthood! Very interesting. I like that Greta put the spin of finding love/family and becoming a writer. But I think the most impactful scene for me was when Amy tells Laurie “And I will not be the person you settle for because you cannot have her.” And we get the iconic Florence Pugh frown. Cinema!

I think defining a timeline with a color pallet is just incredible. Is there another movie that does this?

This is my favorite movie! What I love most is that as I transition from girlhood to womanhood, I can always rewatch it and find something new that speaks to me. The soundtrack and costumes are absolutely beautiful. I truly could go on forever!

This was a rare instance for me of liking a movie more than a book! I loved that the ending was changed and that Jo stayed a writer. I also loved Timothee Chalamet in this movie. It turned me into a fan of his!

As an ambitious woman who HATES getting asked about my long term relationship and when we are getting married, I found the ending perfect. Women have and are always equated to when they will marry. I found it the best of both world without giving into the patriarchy.

One aspect of Little Women that I really like, is how it depicts family relationships. Jo has a very different way to interact with each of her sisters. With Meg she's very protective, but learns to accept her marriage and find joy in the growth of the family, with Beth she's devoted to her safety but has to learn to say goodbye to her, and with Amy she finds conflict because they desire similar things, they get competitive, but they find a way to accept the ending. The story shows a lot about family connections and how those moments can bring joy or heartbreak.
I found all of this very beautiful. Jo accepting that she feels lonely is so simple and human. The hope in either of the endings is that Jo finds relief for her loneliness. And that's a hope that any of us can have.

I see the similarities in the scene where Jo talking with Marmee expressing her frustration and with the scene where America Ferrera gives her monologue in the Barbie movie. Both great speeches that had me sobbing - Greta is a true girls girl!

In French the title of the book/movie can be translated back to « the 4 four daughters of the doctor March » and I hate it. It’s just like Amy said women are their father’s property

I think it was brilliant for you to put this movie in a lineup about love, when it feels like Greta's response to the way Hollywood tells stories about women. Female stories have felt like they are only worth telling if they “fall in love, or die” like the publisher mentions in the movie. It’s crazy to think that over a hundred years later, and we are still telling the same stories about women. I love how there are multiple perspectives from each of the women, and ultimately they are able to make their own decisions about who and how to love. Thanks for this breakdown!👏

The youtube video “How Little Women (2019) Brought Alcott’s Intentions out of the Subtext” is GREAT to see how truly brilliant Gerwig’s adaptation really is!!

The original book and most adaptations tell a linear story, so why do you think Greta Gerwig decided to tell this version in a non-linear way?

i once thought it was strange that jo turns down laurie because she believes she will never marry only to marry for love later on. i don’t know how i feel about it now. I think my discernment is clouded by timothy’s pretty face🤷♂️

The only fault I find in this movie is the god-damn costume design.
