Remember reading Beowulf in High school but years ago I found a copy that was a translation done by Seamus Heany that I enjoyed immensely. I haven’t read Grendel but I will give it a go.

My English teacher recommended me Seamus Heaney’s translation of Beowulf for my first read. I was wondering are on that one. Is it a good starting point? Or is too simplified?

In terms of copies of Beowulf, I'm all about the footnotes, hate endnotes. what classic pub and translator do you recommend?

I studied The Oxford Book of ‘Narrative’ Verse for O level, years ago - many Scottish, as well as English poets. Thoughts on Tam O’Shanter?

I full admit that at the time I read Beowulf it was required reading for a high school class, and I just genuinely never enjoyed required reading over much, so I think this is a sign I should give Beowulf a second chance 😅

Grendel, the name sounds familiar. The name sounds as if Scandinavian folklore.
