Boone claimed that following a night of drinking, they played a game of hide and seek and thought it would be "funny" to lock Torres inside a suitcase. She claimed she then went upstairs, accidentally fell asleep, and found him unresponsive the next morning… The prosecution's case heavily relied on two devastating videos recovered from Boone's own cell phone. The footage showed Torres gasping for air and begging to be let out, while Boone taunted him, saying, "That's what I feel like when you cheat on me." Boone's defense team argued battered woman syndrome, claiming she was a victim of sustained domestic abuse by Torres and had acted out of fear and self defense. Boone took the stand herself, claiming she believed Torres could get out of the suitcase on his own. e case drew extensive media coverage, not only for its bizarre nature but also because Boone cycled through nine different attorneys before her trial even began, with several citing her difficult behavior as the reason for their withdrawal. At one point, the judge ruled she had forfeited her right to court appointed counsel, though attorney James Owens ultimately stepped in to represent her. On December 2, 2024, Orange County Judge Michael Kraynick sentenced Boone to life in prison without the possibility of parole. During her sentencing, she delivered a controversial 20 minute speech wherein she stated she "forgave herself for falling in love with a monster." Following her conviction, Boone immediately expressed shock and intent to appeal.
