I don’t know why everyone goes on about this solo. It’s not that good. Clapton’s solo during Concert for George is my definitive version. Prince is highly technical but doesn’t have the soul of the song in his play.

I do not think the solo was improvised. Prince felt he had to prove himself to these legends. They all were decades past needing to show off. It’s a good solo, but Prince should be listed as a great musician, but not up there on guitar players lists

Without Prince it was truly a legendary stage, and there have been many legendary performances on these types of shows. The addition of Princes’ solo made it ICONIC!!!

Very interesting another perspective from a legendary drummer. When I look back I’m marvel at the fact that Tom Petty and Prince were on the same stage. And you could say that it’s a tribute guitar solo to rock history, it was his tribute to what he grew up with the rock side of what music he also loved.

From the every day guy watching this song being done as a fan. Was in shock, pure talent and showmanship. A great mix of musicians playing to honor a man that could play, with his son playing along, here comes a legend to echo a talent to the players at the surprise of the fans. It really was amazing and will go down in the years to come as a great moment
