@drdavidabbasi: Inside a Total Knee Replacement: What Actually Happens in the OR 🦴 This procedure transforms the lives of patients suffering from severe arthritis and knee pain. Here's what you're seeing: The Process: After careful planning and precise measurements, we remove the damaged cartilage and bone from the femur (thighbone), tibia (shinbone), and often the kneecap. These surfaces are then reshaped to fit the prosthetic components—typically made of metal alloys and medical-grade plastic that work together to recreate smooth, pain-free movement. Why it's needed: Total knee replacements are typically performed when severe osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis causes debilitating pain that no longer responds to conservative treatments like physical therapy, injections, or medications. What makes it successful: Precision alignment and balance of the joint Proper soft tissue management High-quality implants designed to last 15-20+ years Comprehensive rehabilitation after surgery Recovery timeline: Hospital stay: 1-3 days typically Walking (with assistance): Often the same day Return to daily activities: 6-12 weeks Full recovery: 3-6 months Modern techniques have made this one of the most successful procedures in orthopedics, with over 90% of patients experiencing significant pain relief and improved quality of life. Back in 2016 when I was 55, I had both knees replaced eight months apart. Both surgeries were very successful and still no problems. My surgeon said it sounds like a woodworking shop in the OR.
