I don’t think its about booking rwandair, all this airlines have certain rules and regulations. If you miss a leg in a ticket, you might not be able to use it again or you pay certain fee. Also regardless of the connecting flight, you still need to check in, this is why you need to understand fare rules when booking flights. Sorry about your experience

I think the airline was wrong and giving you that kind of experience but I see where the issue started from which was getting to the airport at 4pm when the flight was leaving at 5pm. Typically most or all airlines start boarding 1hr before departure so technically for an international flight you guys were late. Anything could have happened at security and you could miss the flight. My advice will be when traveling to another country and might not know their rules try to get to the airport early even if they rescheduled the flight to another time at least you are at the airport.

ex airline employee here though not Rwandair but an intl airline. for intl flights, boarding starts 1hr before takeoff, so flight and bag drop off closes. typically that 3pm your original flight time, you should be at your gate. and for going on another flight with a separate airline, you were deemed no show and they can cancel your return leg. Next time, try clarifying everything at the airline counter before leaving. a lot of these rules are by IATA.

So sorry about your experience. The airline definitely needs to improve. Just to share another angle as a travel consultant; missing a flight segment is usually treated as a no-show, which can lead to the remaining flights being cancelled or suspended, sometimes requiring a no-show fee to reactivate. Also, arriving about an hour before departure (especially after leaving the transit area) can be risky due to bag drop, security, and other checks.

For international flights, it’s generally expected that passengers arrive at the airport at least 2–3 hours before departure, as most check-in desks close about 90 minutes prior. It’s an easy thing to miss the first time you’re travelling internationally. Sorry for the stress. Also, some of these cheaper airlines honestly aren’t worth the hassle. another tip is to schedule the longer layover on your return leg, so even if there are delays, you’ve already met your commitment.

For international flights, you’re suppose to check in at least 2-3 hours before the time. It was simply a case of no show. Check in would have close 1hr to the flight. They should already be boarding by that time

It’s not about the airlines 😎airline ticket have penalties It was a No show already in the case of missing the connecting flight from Kigali so the penalty is an addition of No show +Difference for the next day fare and date change I actually love when client face this themselves cos if it’s an agent that told you about this penalty you would never believe her

But that’s how airlines are . If you have a ticket and you don’t complete the trip you can’t get on the returning flight . Being your first time it’s understandable. Also Rwanda Airport is very tricky it’s advisable to go 3 hours before checkin .
