It feels less like a resting place and more like a waiting room between epochs, the air tasting of iron, pine resin, and restraint. Beneath these stones lie the town’s quiet engineers of survival: Transylvanian Saxon guild masters, Lutheran pastors, midwives who outlived plagues, and merchants who counted their lives in wool and salt. Some graves belong to families who defended the citadel walls in the 15th century, others to teachers who kept German schooling alive when borders and loyalties shifted like bad weather. Lore insists that unmarked plots hold victims of cholera outbreaks and forgotten soldiers from imperial armies that marched through and vanished, leaving only buttons, bone, and rumor. The nearby Church on the Hill, reached by its covered stairway, presides over it all like an exhausted archivist who’s seen too much to be impressed.
