North America is the continent. The United States of America can be shortened to America, since the "United States" just dictates it's composed of states that are united. Just like the official name of Mexico is Estados Unidos Mexicanos, it can be shortened to Mexico. Just like the Kingdom of Spain can be shortened to just Spain. You're not proving anything.
